Dr. Natalie Ebner is among the University of Florida researchers exploring whether AI or humans are better at detecting deepfakes.
In a large, recent study, psychologists and computer scientists from the UF College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, UF Department of Clinical and Health Psychology, UF Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering, ECE Florida, the McKnight Brain Institute, the Florida Institute for National Security (FINS), and the Florida Institute for Cybersecurity Research found that AI programs were up to 97% accurate at identifying deepfake images. In contrast, human participants performed no better than chance.
However, the study also revealed an important limitation—AI accuracy dropped significantly when detecting deepfake videos.
